The Queensland Rugby League (QRL) has been shaken by the sudden resignation of its chief executive, Ben Ikin. The announcement comes just days before the State of Origin series opener against New South Wales, scheduled for May 27 in Sydney.
Resignation Details
Ikin formally notified QRL chairman Brian Canavan of his decision, which has also been communicated to the QRL board. The former Maroons Origin star, who joined the QRL as CEO in May 2023 after serving as the Broncos football boss under former Brisbane coach Kevin Walters, is expected to remain in his role until the end of July.
Impact on the QRL
During Ikin's tenure, the QRL saw a 12% increase in playing numbers across Queensland, according to News Corp. The Maroons also secured victories in the 2023 and 2025 State of Origin series under coach Billy Slater, who is off-contract at the end of the 2026 campaign.
Ikin, a former NRL 360 co-host, is not anticipated to join the Perth Bears, who enter the NRL next year. Instead, the 49-year-old is expected to pursue new corporate opportunities.
Statements
In a statement on Thursday, Ikin said: 'I have thoroughly enjoyed my time working at the QRL. I've met so many people and created some incredible memories. I leave feeling very grateful.'
QRL chairman Brian Canavan added: 'Ben's leadership has placed the QRL in a very strong position in the sporting landscape, and our ongoing strategies and programs are well advanced.'
