Japan's Top 3 Cities Ranked: Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto Honest Review
Japan's Top 3 Cities Ranked: Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto

Japan offers an incredible array of experiences, and every traveller will have a unique journey. For those planning a trip, here is an honest ranking of the three must-visit destinations: Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto.

1. Tokyo: A Perfect 10

Tokyo is a city that never runs out of things to do. At night, neon lights dominate the skyline, and crowds gather to see famous billboards. It may feel a bit dystopian to queue for an advertisement, but the overstimulating and adorable atmosphere makes it oddly satisfying.

Rain or shine, Tokyo has activities for every weather. On rainy days, arcades offer hours of fun with claw machines, where seasoned players walk away with carrier bags full of plushies. Unique cafes abound, such as the MiPig cafe in Harajuku, where friendly pigs climb onto your lap.

In good weather, temples and shrines are plentiful. Gōtokuji Temple, home to the lucky cats, is a personal favourite. Ueno Park, near many hotels, showcases cherry blossoms in season. No visit is complete without seeing Shibuya Crossing, where people dash across day and night for the perfect photo. Shibuya Sky offers a breathtaking view where pedestrians look like ants.

Tokyo is a phenomenal place that will forever hold a special spot in my heart. I hope to return one day.

2. Osaka: A Strong 9

Often called a mini Tokyo, Osaka packs its own neon-lit punch. It feels more manageable, allowing you to see everything you want. The food is amazing, especially the viral street food, and the atmosphere is incredible. Billboards like the Running Man are popular, and a mini-cruise offers a full view of the city.

The aquarium is a highlight, featuring a whale shark. Nightlife is exciting, with karaoke until the early hours and free drinks flowing. However, the Don Quijote Ferris wheel and Ebisu Tower were not operational during my visit, but they are expected to open later this year.

Osaka has a special charm that calls me back.

3. Kyoto: An 8.5 Despite Crowds

Kyoto felt the busiest of the three, likely due to limited space for tourists. Everyone heads to the same attractions, making crowds more noticeable. Upon arrival after a long journey, finding a restaurant was challenging, which dampened the first impression.

However, waking up early the next day redeemed the experience. Bamboo forests, shrines, and day trips like Nara Deer Park and Uji are wonderful. Kyoto's natural beauty and charm are impressive in a different way from Tokyo and Osaka. I recommend starting your day at 6am at the latest.

Activities include making chopsticks, participating in a tea ceremony, making deer bow for crackers, a river cruise, and soaking in the atmosphere.

Final Thoughts

Each city is incredible and worth visiting. If you must choose one, Tokyo is the top pick. It is unlike anywhere else and absolutely phenomenal. You will not regret it.
