Despite being present in every room, skirting boards are often overlooked during routine cleaning, making them prime spots for dust accumulation. Positioned throughout the home, they continuously gather debris, pet hair, lint, and dust. Tackling them can seem like hard work, requiring you to crouch down low and wipe them with a microfibre or dusting cloth.
Yet even with these approaches, the dust quickly returns. That is when I stumbled upon a brilliant trick that genuinely transformed my cleaning routine. It relies on using tumble dryer sheets. Normally used in laundry to soften clothes and minimise static, tumble dryer sheets make perfect dusting tools.
Their slightly adhesive texture helps capture and hold dust rather than simply shifting it about. What is more, they deposit a thin anti-static coating that actively repels dust following cleaning.
The method could not be simpler either. I took a fresh dryer sheet and ran it the full length of each skirting board. I immediately noticed how well it collected dust, particularly compared to a microfibre cloth, which is my usual go-to. The sheet moved smoothly across the surface, and I managed to clean every skirting board throughout my house in just 10 minutes.
The true measure of success was seeing how long it would take for dust to return, but it has now been a couple of weeks, and there is still no sign of it settling back. I get my tumble dryer sheets from Home Bargains for roughly £2, though they are available at any supermarket.
The ideal approach is to buy scented sheets, ensuring your entire home enjoys a subtle fragrance. I always keep tumble dryer sheets in my cleaning cupboard, which means this hack costs me practically nothing. Cleaning skirting boards might not be the most exciting chore, but it is vital year-round to maintain a dust-free home, particularly if you are prone to allergies.
