Kimchi Superfood May Slow Ageing And Aid Weight Loss

A £2 jar of fermented kimchi could help slow the ageing process and support weight loss, according to recent studies. The traditional Korean dish, available in UK supermarkets such as Morrisons and ASDA, is made by fermenting vegetables like cabbage, radish, and carrots with chilli, garlic, ginger, and soy sauce.

A 2025 review cited by Healthline suggests that fermented foods like kimchi may promote anti-ageing by reducing oxidative stress, supporting the immune system, lowering inflammation, preserving cell balance, and enhancing gut bacteria. These benefits are attributed to live microbes and compounds produced during fermentation, including organic acids and bioactive peptides.

Research from 2024 indicates that kimchi can aid weight management. One study found that kimchi consumption increased beneficial gut bacteria such as Akkermansia muciniphila, which is associated with anti-obesity effects, while reducing obesity-linked Proteobacteria. Another study noted that men eating one to three servings of kimchi daily had a lower risk of obesity compared to those consuming less than one serving.

Kimchi is commonly served as an accompaniment, for example with Korean fried chicken. M&S Food suggests incorporating it into meals, and it can also be made at home. While further research is needed, experts say consuming kimchi as part of a balanced diet may support weight loss or management.
