Dr Syed Nadeem Abbas of the Dr SNA Clinic has pinpointed three everyday fruits that could significantly help minimise discomfort. His advice focuses on accessible, affordable options: oranges, apples, and bananas.

Based on typical UK supermarket prices, incorporating these into your daily diet is remarkably economical. An orange costs roughly 30p, a banana about 16p, and an apple around 40p. "So for around a pound a day, you can give your joints a real nutritional boost," Dr Syed explained to the Express.

He emphasises that while no single food is a miracle cure, consistently eating these fruits delivers a powerful combination of vitamin C, quercetin, potassium, and antioxidants. These nutrients are scientifically linked to supporting healthier cartilage, reducing inflammation, and maintaining stronger bones.

Oranges: The Cartilage Support Essential

Citrus fruits like oranges are loaded with vitamin C, a critical component for the body's production of collagen. Collagen is the key protein that keeps cartilage, ligaments, and bones strong and flexible.

"When cartilage wears down, joints feel stiff, creaky and painful," said Dr Syed. At about 16p each, bananas offer unique advantages, primarily through their high potassium content. Potassium is a mineral linked to better bone health and healthier muscle function.

"Stronger bones and better muscle function give your joints a more stable, supported environment, which can make movement feel easier and more comfortable," Dr Syed stated. Bananas also contain vitamin C and other antioxidants, adding to the joint-supporting mix.
