Asda Issues Urgent Recall Over Asbestos and Choking Hazards in Toys
Asda Recalls Toys Over Asbestos and Choking Risks

Supermarket giant Asda has issued an urgent product recall for three bestselling toy items this week, citing serious safety concerns over asbestos contamination and choking hazards. The retailer is advising customers who purchased the affected products to return them immediately for a full refund, regardless of whether they have a receipt.

Immediate Safety Alert for Three Toy Products

Asda has withdrawn the Hapello Power Train, Stretcherz Stretch Squad Assortment, and Slammerz Assortment Toys from all its stores and online platforms. The recall notices were published following internal testing and safety assessments that revealed potential health risks.

Asbestos Contamination in Stretcherz and Slammerz Toys

The Stretcherz Stretch Squad Assortment and Slammerz Assortment Toys have been recalled due to fears they may contain asbestos, a prohibited carcinogenic material. Asda stated that testing indicated the sand-like material inside some products could have trace levels of asbestos.

Product details for the asbestos-affected items:

  • Stretcherz Stretch Squad Assortment: Barcode 5050837662419, sold from January 2024 to February 2026
  • Slammerz Assortment Toys: Barcode 5050835105345, sold from January 2025 to February 2026

In its official announcement, Asda emphasized: "The overall risk is considered low, but because asbestos should not be present in any amount, we are recalling the affected items as a precaution. While we have received no reports of harm, we are taking this action out of an abundance of caution."

Choking Hazard with Hapello Power Train

Separately, the Hapello Power Train has been recalled because it presents a choking risk for young children. Asda explained that in some cases, the orange steam dome on top of the train could detach, creating a small part that children might swallow.

Product details for the choking hazard item:

  • Hapello Power Train: Barcode 5063089308547, sold from August 2024 to February 2026

The retailer confirmed: "If you have purchased the Hapello Power Train, please bring it back to your nearest store where you will be given a full refund. You do not need your receipt."

Return Procedures and Regulatory Context

Customers are encouraged to return the affected products to any Asda store at their earliest convenience. Those unable to visit a store can contact Asda Customer Relations on 0330 053 0111 for alternative arrangements. All returns will receive complete refunds without requiring proof of purchase.

The Office for Product Safety and Standards has been notified and has cautioned that other retailers might have stocked these toys, with further guidance expected shortly. Asda has removed all affected products from shop floors and online listings while the investigation continues.

This recall highlights ongoing concerns about product safety standards in the retail sector, particularly regarding imported toys and materials. Asda has reiterated its commitment to "the highest standards of safety and quality" and apologized for any inconvenience caused to customers.
