Chloe Zhao Credits Irish Energy for Hamnet's BAFTA Success
Zhao: Irish Energy Fuelled Hamnet's BAFTA Triumph

Hamnet director Chloe Zhao has disclosed her profound personal connection to Ireland, attributing the film's success to the distinctive energy and spirit drawn from Irish culture. The acclaimed filmmaker made these remarks during the 2026 BAFTA Film Awards, where the historical drama secured two prestigious awards, including Outstanding British Film.

Irish Influence on Award-Winning Adaptation

The film, adapted from Maggie O'Farrell's celebrated novel, prominently features Irish actors Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal in leading roles. Buckley portrays Agnes Hathaway, historically known as Anne, the wife of William Shakespeare, in a narrative exploring family dynamics following the tragic loss of their young son. Zhao emphasised that O'Farrell's Irish heritage infused the project with a unique cultural resonance.

A Personal and Cultural Connection

During the winners' press conference, Zhao elaborated on her bond with Ireland, stating, "I have a very personal connection with Ireland, and I can't share what that is. But the land and the culture and the desire to try to remember what might have been forgotten and passed away from that culture is really, really strong." She further explained, "When I met Maggie and read her book, I felt that, yes, this is a story about Shakespeare's family, but for some reason, her being Irish has something to do with it. There's some spirit. There's some energy in it that came from her part of the world."

Perfect Casting and Creative Synergy

O'Farrell, the novelist from Coleraine in Northern Ireland, humorously questioned Zhao's casting process, joking, "I said, 'did you actually do any auditions, or did you just go straight to Ireland and you didn't come back?'" However, she affirmed that Buckley and Mescal were unequivocally the best choices for their roles, praising the entire cast as perfectly selected. Zhao reciprocated by lauding O'Farrell for creating a transformative experience, describing the filmmaking journey as life-changing and noting they could always reflect on being profoundly altered by the project, from forest settings to Shakespeare's Globe Theatre.

Awards Recognition and Oscar Prospects

Alongside the Outstanding British Film award, Jessie Buckley, hailing from Killarney in County Kerry, clinched the Best Actress BAFTA. Paul Mescal, from Dublin, has garnered multiple nominations throughout the awards season for his performance but has yet to secure a prize. Meanwhile, Buckley has emerged as a frontrunner for the Oscars, dominating the awards circuit with an unbeatable streak for her portrayal in Hamnet, solidifying the film's impact and the standout contributions of Irish talent.
