Manchester United Manager Dismisses Division Claims After Owner's Controversial Immigration Remarks

Interim Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick has firmly rejected suggestions that co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe's controversial comments about immigration have created any division within his squad. The United boss spoke publicly on Friday, emphasizing the strong unity and positive environment at the club despite the political storm surrounding Ratcliffe's statements.

Ratcliffe's Controversial Comments and Subsequent Apology

Earlier this month, billionaire co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe told Sky News that the United Kingdom had been "colonised by immigrants," sparking immediate controversy and condemnation from political figures including Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham. Ratcliffe later issued a statement expressing regret, saying he was sorry if his remarks had "offended some people."

Carrick revealed that Ratcliffe has not spoken directly to him or the players since making the inflammatory comments, but the interim manager insisted he was "fine" with this arrangement and did not expect "constant communication" from the club's ownership. The manager drew parallels with his former boss Sir Alex Ferguson's well-documented aversion to any external distractions affecting the squad, but maintained that Ratcliffe's words had not negatively impacted his players.

Carrick Emphasizes Squad Unity and Positive Environment

"We're definitely all pulling together," Carrick stated emphatically. "I think if you've been around here, in and around the stadium in the last few weeks, and certainly in this environment at the training ground quite closely, it's as clear as it could ever be that we're pulling together."

The manager expressed particular pride in the diversity of the club, echoing a statement Manchester United issued the day after Ratcliffe's interview. Carrick's comments come as his team prepares for Monday night's Premier League clash at Everton, where they will be seeking a fifth victory from their last six matches.

Impressive Form Under Carrick's Leadership

United have enjoyed strong form since Carrick took temporary charge, dropping points only once in their last outing at West Ham on February 10 when Benjamin Sesko's late goal earned the Hammers a point. The team entered the weekend sitting in fourth place in the Premier League table, sparking discussions about potential Champions League qualification.

"It's good that everyone's asking that question," Carrick responded when queried about European qualification prospects. "It shows that we've put ourselves in a good position to start with. We're not getting too carried away now all of a sudden after a few weeks. We know where we're at, we're in a good position. I'd still like to be in a better position, mind you, but we're in a good position."

Praise for Departing Star Casemiro

One of the key performers during United's recent resurgence has been Brazilian midfielder Casemiro, who will leave the club at the end of the season. Carrick offered glowing praise for the 33-year-old former Real Madrid star, highlighting his influence both on and off the pitch.

"Cas has been fantastic since I came in really, on and off the pitch," Carrick said. "Experience is a great thing if you use it in the right way. Being a senior player here there is almost the responsibility of setting the example, and helping the younger players, helping the rest of the boys, and passing on your experiences in a positive way. He's been top since I came, in so many ways, and he's been a pleasure to work with. I look forward to continuing working with him for a few months yet."

Carrick concluded with a note of cautious optimism about United's prospects: "We're positive, I think we should be. I think there's a lot of good things to take and look forward to. But then again, it's up to us and putting it into play really. It's possible, it's up to us to take the opportunity."
