Team GB have hailed a 'historic' Winter Olympics after Britain's greatest performance in the 102-year history of the Games left them 15th in the medal table. Zoe Atkin's women's halfpipe bronze on Sunday secured a total of five medals, equalling the tally from Sochi 2014 and Pyeongchang 2018, but with a record three golds.
Matt Weston won two golds in individual skeleton and the mixed event with Tabitha Stoecker. Charlotte Bankes and Huw Nightingale also took gold in mixed snowboard cross, while the men's curling team earned silver. UK Sport performance director Kate Baker said: 'It is far and away our most successful Games ever, both in terms of total medals achieved but also the number of Olympic champions.'
Baker added: 'Ultimately the message is the Brits are coming again.' Team GB also achieved a record 24 top-10 finishes, surpassing the previous best of 18 from Sochi. Chef de mission Eve Muirhead noted: 'We have seen some incredible performances... and a handful of fourth places, which any other day could have been very different results.'
Muirhead praised Matt Weston's resilience and determination, saying: 'He's just got that incredible athlete mindset.' Regarding criticism of funding for sports like skeleton without UK facilities, Baker said UK Sport would look at any sport offering potential, but noted the reality of investment required. She concluded: 'We're not done yet. Great Britain has more to come.'
