A wealthy family from abroad is seeking a tutor for their one-year-old son, offering a salary of £180,000 a year to help the child become an 'English gentleman'. The family, based in North London, want the boy educated in a quintessentially English environment, with exposure to polo and classical music, with the aim of preparing him for a public school such as Eton and making him 'truly bicultural'.
The position was advertised on the Times Educational Supplement job board. The advert states that the role centres on immersing the child in British culture, values and subtleties before any cultural bias takes hold. The ideal candidate is described as well educated, with an extensive vocabulary, and speaking with received pronunciation.
The child should be introduced to a range of British experiences, including visits to Lord's, Wimbledon and Twickenham, with age-appropriate understanding of sports like cricket, tennis, rugby, equestrianism and rowing. The advert explains that the family have an older son and felt that starting his education and cultural integration at age five was already too late, hence their search for a tutor for the younger child now.
According to the advert, the boy comes from a multilingual family, and his parents are looking to cultivate a truly bicultural child. Dozens of applications have reportedly already been received, with interviews beginning next month. However, the advert has also drawn criticism after being shared on Mumsnet, with one user commenting: 'Why not let kids be kids and give them support and opportunities but let them choose their own path.' Another wrote: 'Good grief. Poor kid.'
