In a chilling courtroom confrontation, Strictly Come Dancing head judge Shirley Ballas came face-to-face with the obsessed stalker who terrorised her for months outside her Wimbledon home.
Shocking CCTV footage presented to Westminster Magistrates' Court showed defendant Alex Higgs methodically lurking near the television star's property, often appearing multiple times within a single day. The 25-year-old's fixation began after developing what prosecutors described as an "unhealthy obsession" with the renowned dancer.
The Pattern of Persistence
Between September 2023 and January 2024, Higgs engaged in a relentless campaign of harassment that left Ballas genuinely fearing for her safety. The court heard how he would:
- Linger outside her home for hours at a time
- Return to the property multiple times daily
- Create an atmosphere of constant surveillance and threat
Prosecutor Luke Staton revealed that Higgs's behaviour escalated to the point where Ballas felt "genuinely scared and upset," describing the impact as making her feel "like a prisoner in her own home."
A Celebrity's Security Nightmare
The emotional toll on the Strictly judge became increasingly evident as the stalking persisted. Ballas implemented additional security measures and found herself constantly looking over her shoulder, with the prosecutor noting she "no longer felt safe in her own home."
Higgs, representing himself in court, offered a bizarre explanation for his behaviour, claiming he was merely "star spotting" and attempting to connect with Ballas regarding potential dance opportunities for his niece.
Legal Repercussions and Restraining Order
Despite pleading guilty to one count of stalking, Higgs attempted to downplay his actions, stating he "didn't mean to cause any harm or harassment." However, District Judge Michael Hamilton immediately imposed a five-year restraining order, prohibiting Higgs from:
- Contacting Shirley Ballas directly or indirectly
- Approaching within 100 metres of her Wimbledon home
- Attending any events where she might be present
The case has been adjourned for sentencing until September 27th, with Higgs facing potential imprisonment for his actions. This case highlights the serious nature of celebrity stalking and the profound impact it has on victims' sense of security and mental wellbeing.
