Royal Navy Sailor Convicted of Multiple Sexual Assaults on Colleagues
Able Seaman Sian Dowsett, a 25-year-old Royal Navy sailor, has been found guilty of six sexual assaults against her shipmates, both male and female, during her service aboard HMS Dauntless. The court martial at Bulford Military Court in Wiltshire heard that Dowsett's behaviour was described as a 'cancer on the ship', with prosecutors detailing a pattern of inappropriate physical contact and sexual comments.
Pattern of Intimidation and Abuse
Prosecutor Graham Coombes presented evidence showing Dowsett targeted both new female crew members and male sailors she believed would not report her. The assaults occurred throughout 2023 and 2024, ranging from bottom slapping and nipple pinching to genital grabbing. Coombes described Dowsett as having a 'strong, confident, intimidating personality' who sexually assaulted those she took a fancy to while strolling around the warship.
Despite Dowsett's claims that the allegations were part of a conspiracy against her due to her being 'loud and opinionated', the court found the testimony of ten witnesses credible. Coombes questioned why so many individuals would fabricate such serious allegations without substantial motive beyond personal dislike.
Specific Incidents of Assault
The court heard multiple specific accounts of Dowsett's behaviour:
- She grabbed a male sailor's crotch and made comments including 'I like my coffee how I like my men, big and strong'
- She repeatedly slapped a male Able Seaman's bottom in the ship's galley, leaving him 'stunned'
- She grabbed a female petty officer's breasts while she was naked and caressed her nipple, asking 'do you like that baby girl?'
- She pinched a male Leading Hand's nipple for approximately thirty minutes while maintaining eye contact
- She slapped a new female crew member's bottom with such force it caused stinging, commenting 'you have a really nice bottom to smack'
One victim explained he didn't initially report the assaults because it was 'a long deployment' and he didn't want to create a bad environment early on, fearing the chain of command wouldn't take him seriously.
Defence Claims and Court Findings
During her testimony, Dowsett denied the allegations, suggesting they were retaliatory for her reporting a colleague for buying cocaine in Colombia. She claimed she would never use the terminology attributed to her and described herself as heterosexual, though acknowledging past 'bisexual tendencies'.
The court rejected these explanations, noting the consistency of multiple independent accounts and the unlikely coordination required for such a widespread conspiracy. The pattern of similar assaults across different victims convinced the panel of Dowsett's guilt on six of the seven charges.
Able Seaman Sian Dowsett will be sentenced at a later date following her conviction for these serious sexual offences against her Royal Navy colleagues.
