Princess Beatrice Linked to Labour MP Husband in Spy Probe

Princess Beatrice has been connected to a major national security investigation after photographs emerged showing her smiling alongside the husband of a Labour MP arrested on suspicion of spying for China. David Taylor, 39, the spouse of Labour MP Joani Reid, was detained in London earlier this week alongside two other former Labour advisers before being released on bail as police inquiries continue.

Royal Connections to Alleged Spy Activities

Today it was revealed that Mr Taylor participated in a nine-day charity expedition to Nepal in October 2016 alongside Princess Beatrice, who is ninth in line to the British throne. The trip was organized by the Franks Family Foundation, where Beatrice serves as a patron, and involved observing the work of renowned Nepalese eye surgeon Dr Sandek Ruit and visiting a children's home.

While there is absolutely no evidence suggesting Princess Beatrice's involvement in any alleged espionage activities, the photographs demonstrate Mr Taylor's extensive connections within Britain's elite circles, including royal figures. During the same Nepal visit, Beatrice also held a private meeting with the Bhutanese Royal Family.

Charity Founder Expresses Shock

Simon Franks, founder of the Franks Family Foundation, expressed profound astonishment at Mr Taylor's arrest. "During his time as a policy advisor to the foundation, I found David to be a kind, charitable and proud Brit. I am astonished by the arrest," Mr Franks stated.

He emphasized that Princess Beatrice "has worked tirelessly for the foundation for over a decade, supporting our education and public health projects in Laos, Cambodia and Nepal, to which she has travelled on many occasions." Mr Franks insisted Beatrice "did not know him prior and has not seen him since" the 2016 trip.

Labour MP's Response and Self-Suspension

Joani Reid, the Labour MP for East Kilbride and Strathaven, described this week as "the worst of my life" following her husband's arrest. The 40-year-old mother of two stressed: "I have done nothing wrong. I want to reiterate something very important: I am not under investigation by the police and no accusations have been against me."

Ms Reid announced she had "voluntarily suspended" herself from the Labour whip following discussions with the Chief Whip, stating she would not sit as a Labour MP until internal investigations conclude. "I also do not want my children – who have nothing to answer for and who deserve privacy and compassion – to find themselves subject to intrusion," she added.

Expanding Police Investigation

The investigation has widened significantly with police searching multiple properties across the country. James Robinson, a former aide to ex-Labour deputy leader Lord Watson and husband of former Labour MP Gloria de Piero, confirmed officers searched his London home with a warrant related to the China spy probe.

In a separate development, journalist Martin Shipton, 68, was awakened at 6:20am in his Cardiff home by eight counter-terrorism officers who spent thirteen hours searching his property, seizing electronic devices and his passport. Mr Shipton told reporters police were interested in a trip he took to Hong Kong in 2023 with David Taylor.

Geopolitical Context and Parliamentary Warnings

The arrests occur against a backdrop of increasing concerns about Chinese political interference in Nepal, a country that shares a border with China. In 2022, a leaked report accused Chinese security forces of operating in Nepal's northern Humla district, though China consistently denies political interference worldwide.

Commons Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle recently warned parliamentary staff about ongoing risks of foreign state interference, stating: "You are a critical part of our defence against foreign state activity. The risks are not receding. We all need to take action to make Parliament and the parliamentary community more resilient to foreign state espionage and interference."

The Labour Party has described the allegations as "incredibly serious" but declined further comment while police investigations continue. Mr Taylor and the two other former Labour advisers – identified by the BBC as Matthew Aplin, 43, and Steve Jones, 68 – remain on bail as authorities pursue their inquiries into alleged assistance to a foreign intelligence service.
