A Queensland woman is fighting for her life after sustaining a fractured skull and a brain bleed in a horrific accident in Mexico. Jess, whose full name has not been disclosed, was injured on Saturday in Sayulita, a coastal village approximately 800 kilometres west of Mexico City.
Critical Condition and Intensive Care
Following the accident, Jess was rushed to a local hospital where she has remained in intensive care. Medical staff have been treating her for swelling and other complications arising from the traumatic injury. Her sister, Celeste Baker, reported that although Jess is showing small signs of improvement, she remains disoriented and faces a long road to recovery.
“Our family’s world was turned upside down this week when my sister, Jess, was involved in a serious accident,” Baker wrote on a GoFundMe page. “We are incredibly grateful that she is receiving care. Unfortunately, we are facing significant out-of-pocket medical costs for her ongoing treatment and recovery.”
Financial Appeal and Family Support
The family is attempting to raise $35,000 to cover hospital care, ongoing treatment, and monitoring. Additionally, once Jess is stable, she may need to be transferred to another facility, and her family requires accommodation as they fly to be by her bedside. Baker described Jess as “strong, independent, and deeply loved by everyone who knows her.” She added, “Right now, our focus is on giving her the best possible chance to recover without the added pressure of overwhelming financial stress.”
Sayulita, where the accident occurred, is a village on Mexico’s Pacific coast backed by the Sierra Madre Occidental mountains and known for its beaches. The incident has drawn attention to the risks faced by travellers abroad and the importance of travel insurance.
