EastEnders actor Tony Caunter, best known for playing Roy Evans on the BBC soap, left a substantial fortune to his four children after his death last October at age 88. The actor's estate was valued at £485,000 after debts and costs, according to recently disclosed documents.
Caunter died just eight days after his wife of 63 years, Frances Wallace. The couple had four children, seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. His family announced his death in a statement, thanking NHS staff at Eastbourne District General Hospital and the team at Eastbourne Gardens nursing home for their care.
Caunter played car dealer Roy Evans on EastEnders from 1994 to 2003, famously marrying Pat Butcher, played by Pam St Clement. His character died of a heart attack in 2003, which the actor later said left him frustrated as he could not return. EastEnders paid tribute, calling him 'warm, kind and humorous' and saying he would be remembered for his 'great love of Pat'.
Beyond EastEnders, Caunter had a long career with roles in Juliet Bravo, Pennies From Heaven, Tumbledown, and Boon. His on-screen son Shaun Williamson, who played Barry Evans, described him as 'a second father' who taught him much about acting and life.
