A popular supermarket has been named as having the best frozen chips, beating major brands McCain and Birds Eye to the top spot. The Guardian assessed oven chips on quality, flavour, and nutritional value, awarding first place to Morrisons' the Best triple-cooked skin-on chips.
These chips, priced at £2.85 for 750g, achieved five stars and were praised as "rich" with a crispy, golden coating and a soft, fluffy centre. The publication highlighted their "excellent texture" and "remarkable value", noting they are made from British potatoes with a coating of maize, rice, pea flour and dextrose.
The best budget option was Tesco's home-style straight-cut oven chips, earning three stars at £2.65 for 950g. The Guardian described them as "chewy yet crunchy" with a "sweet, earthy flavour". Waitrose's No 1 frozen triple-cooked chips, priced at £3.25 for 750g, secured four stars, praised for being "perfectly even" and "really tasty" due to being cooked in beef fat.
Strong Roots proper chips, costing £3.75 for 750g, also earned four stars, characterised as "fluffy and delicious" with a "clean, simple flavour". They hold B Corp certification for sustainability. Koffmann's classic chunky chips, at £3.50 for 800g, received four stars for their "fresh-tasting" and "homemade feel".
McCain's naked oven chips straight cut, costing £1.98 for 900g, were awarded three stars, described as "nostalgic 1980s-style" with a "decent crunch" but "moist and smooth" rather than fluffy. Birds Eye crispy chips, at £2.48 for 900g, also managed three stars, noted as "moreish" with a "savoury-sweet" flavour but "closer to a french fry".
