Steven Gerrard Offers Insight into Liverpool's Domestic Football Woes

Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard has weighed in on the team's ongoing struggles in the Premier League, following a disappointing loss to Brighton. The defeat marks another setback in Arne Slot's second season at the helm, with the Reds now sitting fifth in the table and battling for Champions League qualification.

Gerrard Highlights Squad Depth Concerns

Speaking on TNT Sports, Gerrard suggested that Liverpool currently lacks the necessary depth to compete effectively in both the Champions League and the Premier League. Despite significant investment ahead of the season, including over £400 million on players like Florian Wirtz, Alexander Isak, and Hugo Ekitike, Gerrard believes Slot does not have adequate options on the bench to rotate the squad.

"We have seen it quite a few times this season now where they put a lot of effort, perform really well on the Champions League stage," Gerrard explained. "And all the emotion and all the energy and the intensity you have to put in those games to win or get a result, it's having a big effect on them at the weekend."

He added, "They haven't got the options in the squad or on the bench to really make numerous changes to bring that energy or quality into the team to perform at the same level they do in midweek."

Slot's Tactical Challenges and Injury Woes

The Dutch manager is currently dealing with the absence of key players such as Mohamed Salah and Alexander Isak, forcing him into making changes that are not always by choice. Gerrard noted that Slot had to field many of the same players in the Brighton match, with only a couple of forced alterations.

"He had to play a lot of the same players today, he made a couple of changes that were forced on him," Gerrard said. "But the manager wants to keep the change, rather than make changes for energy and it backfired today."

Mounting Pressure on Arne Slot

Despite leading Liverpool to qualification for the quarter-finals of both the FA Cup and the Champions League this season, Slot is under increasing scrutiny. The loss to Brighton, coupled with a recent draw against Tottenham after being 1-0 up in the final minute, has intensified calls for his dismissal.

Slot acknowledged the pressure in his post-match comments, stating, "There's always pressure at Liverpool, on me and the players. It's completely normal." He emphasized the need to secure Champions League qualification in the league, while also reflecting on the difficulty of facing Brighton away.

"As much as I disliked us losing today, Brighton away has always been a difficult one and will keep being if they keep bringing in the quality of players they do," Slot remarked. "There are other games, like last week being 1-0 up in the last minute against Tottenham and not winning, but away at Brighton a club like Liverpool should be able to get a result."

This season marks the first time in a decade that Liverpool have lost 10 matches, highlighting the severity of their domestic challenges. As the team navigates this turbulent period, Gerrard's analysis sheds light on the underlying issues that may be hindering their performance in the Premier League.
