The Abandons: Netflix's Epic Western with Headey & Anderson
The Abandons: Netflix Release Date & Cast

Netflix is set to deliver a dramatic new series for fans of epic family sagas and Westerns. The Abandons, a highly anticipated drama from executive producer Christopher Keyser, boasts a star-studded cast and a compelling narrative of conflict and survival.

What is The Abandons about?

Set in the Washington Territory in 1854, the show is poised to captivate audiences who enjoy series like Yellowstone. It chronicles the intense rivalry between two families with vastly different backgrounds. The Van Nesses represent a dynasty built on immense wealth and privilege. In stark contrast, The Abandons are a chosen family, a group of orphans and outcasts fiercely protected by a single, determined leader.

The destinies of these two clans become fatally intertwined by two criminal acts, setting the stage for a story that, according to Netflix, echoes the perpetual American struggle between the haves and the have-nots.

When can you watch it?

Mark your calendars, as the complete series of The Abandons will be available for binge-watching on Netflix from 4 December. This release strategy allows viewers to immerse themselves in the entire story without waiting for weekly episodes.

Executive producer Christopher Keyser, speaking to Tudum, teased the show's deeper themes. He stated that amidst the "murder and revenge and a bit of illicit romance", the series explores fundamental questions: "What makes a family? How do you stay good in a bad world? And would you change who you are and what you believe in to protect what you love?" He emphasised that these themes are explored through the perspectives of its two lead actors, making it "really something to watch."

Who stars in the series?

The ensemble cast is a major draw, led by two powerhouse actresses.

Lena Headey, famed for her role in Game of Thrones, plays Fiona Nolan, the leader of The Abandons. Her makeshift family includes the devoted Elias Teller (Nick Robinson), the spirited Dahlia Teller (Diana Silvers), the level-headed Albert Mason (Lamar Johnson), and the fiercely loyal Lilla Belle (Natalia del Riego).

Opposing them is Gillian Anderson, star of The Fall and The X-Files, who portrays Constance, the matriarch of the powerful Van Ness family. Her clan features her ambitious son Garret (Lucas Till), rebellious daughter Trisha (Aisling Franciosi), and the eldest son Willem (Toby Hemingway).

The extensive supporting cast includes notable names such as Brían F. O'Byrne, Patton Oswalt, Michiel Huisman, and Michael Greyeyes, ensuring a rich and complex world.

Is there a trailer?

Yes, an official trailer was released at the beginning of November, giving fans a first look at the high-stakes confrontation between Headey and Anderson's characters. The preview teases the extreme lengths these families will go to in order to protect their own, underscored by the poignant message that "some bonds are stronger than blood."

The trailer has generated significant excitement online. One fan on social media commented, "Lena Headey and Gillian Anderson facing off in a western? Damn, never knew I wanted it, now I need it." Another user expressed their enthusiasm simply: "Gillian Anderson and Lena Headey in the same film together. I'm down to watch."

The Abandons arrives exclusively on Netflix on 4 December.
