Formula One's governing body, the FIA, is closely monitoring weather forecasts for Sunday's Miami Grand Prix due to predictions of heavy thunderstorms. While Friday and Saturday are expected to be sunny, Sunday's forecast indicates a risk of lightning and severe weather in the Miami Gardens area.
Race Timing and Contingency Plans
The race is scheduled for 4pm local time (9pm BST), but could be moved forward by a few hours if lightning is a significant threat, as per the FIA's contingency plan. US law mandates the halt of any outdoor public event and evacuation of spectators if a thunderstorm approaches, adding complexity to the situation.
FIA Statement
An FIA spokesperson confirmed they have a 'contingency plan' in place to minimise disruption, similar to measures taken last year in Miami. The statement read: 'We are monitoring the weather closely and have a contingency plan to ensure the safety of all attendees. The race start time may be adjusted if necessary.'
This comes after Max Verstappen commented on the five-week break, saying he 'wished it was longer.' The Miami Grand Prix is the first race back after the hiatus, and teams are eager to return to action. However, the weather threat could impact the spectacle.
