Susanna Reid Shares Disturbing Hotel Room Experience on Good Morning Britain
During Monday's episode of Good Morning Britain, presenter Susanna Reid opened up about a deeply unsettling incident that occurred to her several years ago in a hotel room. The discussion arose as the programme covered a recent news story about a woman who was sexually assaulted in her hotel accommodation.
Reid's Personal Ordeal in Florida
Susanna Reid recounted that while staying at a hotel in Florida for work, a man unexpectedly entered her room in the middle of the night, carrying a suitcase. The presenter described the profound shock of the experience, explaining that the individual had mistakenly been given a key to her room by hotel reception staff.
"It happened to me in America, obviously not this seriously," Reid stated. "I was staying at a hotel in Florida for work, and somebody came into my room in the middle of the night with their suitcase. Honestly, the shock you have when that happens."
She elaborated that the man had told reception he had lost his key for that particular room, but had been given the wrong room number. Reid believes this was a genuine mistake rather than intentional. "Again, it makes me feel slightly ill talking about it," she admitted. "I went, 'Excuse me!' and they went, 'Oh, I'm really sorry' and left."
Connection to Recent Sexual Assault Case
The conversation on Good Morning Britain was prompted by a distressing case where a woman was sexually assaulted at a Travelodge hotel in 2022. The perpetrator, Kyran Smith, met the victim at a party, discovered where she was staying, and then deceived hotel staff by claiming to be her boyfriend who had lost his key.
Susanna Reid expressed her horror at this incident, stating: "He then accesses her bedroom, it makes me feel sick. He accesses her bedroom and sexually assaults her." She emphasised that the man had no legitimate connection to the victim and should never have been granted access to her room.
Kyran Smith has since been convicted of sexual assault and sentenced to seven and a half years in prison. The victim received a mere £30 refund from Travelodge, which she described as "very insulting."
Hotel Security Procedures Under Scrutiny
Following both incidents, questions have been raised about hotel security protocols. A Travelodge spokesman responded: "The safety and security of our guests is our priority and we were deeply concerned to hear of this distressing incident and our sympathies are with the victim. At the time of the incident our hotel team followed the correct security procedures. We continue to ensure our hotel and customer services teams are trained to follow our approved policies."
Susanna Reid highlighted the broader implications, noting: "It's extraordinary that this happens, in this case, it led to a crime being committed." Her co-presenter Ed Balls joined the discussion, underscoring the importance of robust verification processes in hospitality settings.
The segment on Good Morning Britain has sparked wider conversations about guest safety and the adequacy of current hotel security measures, particularly regarding key distribution and staff training to prevent unauthorized access.
