Mohamed Salah has revealed that advice from Steven Gerrard influenced his decision to leave Liverpool this summer. The Egyptian forward, who scored 257 goals in 441 appearances for the club, said Gerrard told him that sometimes a player must move on for his own good.
Salah's relationship with manager Arne Slot soured after he was dropped for three games late last season, including both legs of the Champions League quarter-final against Paris Saint-Germain. The 33-year-old felt he was unfairly scapegoated for Liverpool's poor form and made his frustrations public on three occasions in the past six months.
Despite the acrimonious end, Salah leaves as one of Liverpool's greatest ever players. He won eight major honours, including the Premier League and Champions League, and is the club's third-highest goalscorer. His first season saw him score 44 goals and win the first of four Premier League Golden Boots.
Liverpool decided not to offer Salah a new contract, which could have cost up to £26m, as his pace has declined and Slot wants more energy in attack. Salah believes he still has more to give at the highest level and is determined to prove his doubters wrong.
