The heartbroken mother of an 11-year-old girl who died in a suspected drugs-related incident has described her daughter as a "loving gorgeous angel" in an emotional tribute.
Olivia Curley passed away at the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow on Monday, November 17, after being rushed to hospital from her home in Helensburgh the previous day.
Family's devastating loss
Samantha Curley paid tribute to her daughter on Wednesday, stating: "This was my baby girl. I want her remembered as a loving gorgeous angel."
She added: "Fly high my darling, you were loved by many, darling. Forever in my heart."
The Hermitage Academy student had been admitted to intensive care after falling ill at her Helensburgh home on Sunday, but medical staff were unable to save her.
Police investigation underway
Police Scotland confirmed they are treating the death as unexplained while investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
A police representative stated: "Around 11.40am on Monday, November 17, we received a report of an 11-year-old girl taken unwell in the Helensburgh area. She had been taken to the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow on Sunday, November 16, and died on Monday, November 17."
The force emphasised that enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding Olivia's death.
Community in mourning
An online fundraiser has been established to support Olivia's grieving family, raising more than £4,000 since her tragic death.
The GoFundMe page described Olivia as a "bright" youngster who was "full of kindness and laughter," adding that her death had caused "unimaginable sadness" within the community.
Douglas Morgan, headteacher at Hermitage Academy, expressed the school's profound grief, describing Olivia as "a much-loved member of our school community."
He noted that she had recently joined the academy from Hermitage Primary and that her loss was "felt profoundly by staff, pupils, and families alike."
Argyll and Bute Council also released a statement expressing devastation at the death of one of their pupils and extending thoughts to the family.
Calls for answers
Scottish Labour Health spokesperson and local MSP Jackie Baillie has called for a thorough investigation into the tragedy.
She stated: "This is utterly heartbreaking and my thoughts are with the family and all those grieving this tragic loss."
Baillie emphasised the importance of understanding what caused Olivia's death "in order to ensure this unthinkable tragedy cannot be repeated."
She confirmed she had been advised by Police Scotland that the investigation remains ongoing and is currently being treated as unexplained.
