Rory McIlroy's Closing Birdie Boosts Cut Hopes at Players Championship
McIlroy's Birdie Raises Cut Hopes at Players Championship

Rory McIlroy expressed optimism about his game after a crucial closing birdie significantly improved his prospects of making the cut at the prestigious Players Championship in Florida. The defending champion, who has been contending with a back injury, now sits at one over par following two rounds of competition.

McIlroy's Resilience After Injury Setback

The Northern Irish golfer had been forced to withdraw from the Arnold Palmer Invitational just days earlier, citing his back issue. After taking extra time to recuperate at home, McIlroy felt sufficiently fit to defend his title at TPC Sawgrass. However, he admitted to feeling "rusty" during a challenging opening round on Thursday, where he could only manage a two-over par 74.

Second Round Improvement and Key Moments

Friday's second round saw a marked improvement in both McIlroy's performance and confidence. He told Sky Sports: "I felt a little bit better. I would say if anything it was just I was struggling to trust everything was OK yesterday."

The five-time major champion started strongly with a birdie on the par-four 10th, his first hole of the day, sinking a five-foot putt. Despite a bogey on the 14th that pushed him back to two over, he recovered with a birdie on the par-five 16th, reaching the turn in one under par.

A setback occurred on the fourth hole where McIlroy found the water, dropping him back to level par for the round. However, the pivotal moment came on the 582-yard par-five ninth hole, his final of the day. McIlroy reached the green in two impressive shots and narrowly missed an eagle opportunity from over thirty feet, settling for a birdie that secured a one-under 71 for the round.

McIlroy's Assessment and Weekend Prospects

Reflecting on his performance, McIlroy noted: "Today I felt pretty good and felt like I hit the ball well. I really just couldn't get a putt to drop. That was the issue." He added, "I tried my best, I grinded and made a good birdie at the last, hopefully to make the cut."

Regarding his physical condition and game readiness, McIlroy explained: "Game feels good, I just went five or six days without really touching a club or doing anything so just getting my feels back a little."

While realistically assessing his tournament chances, McIlroy stated: "Hopefully another couple of days to get myself up the leaderboard. I'm 11 back at the minute, I'm not sure I'm going to contend for the title, but hopefully two good days and have a respectable finish."

The birdie on the ninth hole proved crucial, placing McIlroy just inside the projected cut mark of two-over par. This positions him favorably to return for weekend play, continuing his title defense at one of golf's most significant tournaments.
