Cat Reunited with Owners After 5 Years in 'Christmas Miracle'
Cat Found After 5 Years in Christmas Miracle

A family in Cambridgeshire is celebrating what they call a 'Christmas miracle' after being reunited with their beloved cat, who vanished more than five years ago.

A Mysterious Disappearance

Black cat Bindi disappeared from her home in Haddenham, Cambridgeshire, in August 2020. Her owner, 29-year-old software project manager Jilly Fretwell, was left devastated. Bindi was known for only going outside for short periods, so her prolonged absence was immediately alarming.

"She used to go out for a couple of hours and then come straight back, so it was really odd for her to be missing for more than a day," Jilly recalled. "We really were left in the dark." Despite extensive public appeals, social media posts, and months of searching, there was no trace of the feline.

The Unexpected Christmas Call

After more than 1,000 days with no sign, Jilly had given up hope of ever seeing Bindi again. That changed on Thursday, December 18, 2025, when she received an unexpected phone call from a local vet.

To her astonishment, Bindi had been found and scanned for a microchip. Jilly, who had moved house in the intervening years, was in "complete disbelief". "It wasn’t really until we saw her that we believed it was her," she said.

A Microchip Miracle and a Vital Message

The reunion, just days before December 25th, has prompted Jilly to issue a heartfelt plea to other pet owners. "We’re just so glad we had her microchipped and that she was alive and well," she stated. "I’ve never heard of anyone’s cat going missing for so long and turning up absolutely fine. It did feel like a real Christmas miracle."

There are no clues as to where Bindi spent the last five years, though her good condition suggests she may have been cared for. "She looks in great shape. She’s potentially been inside, but I have no idea," Jilly added.

Now safely home, Bindi's affectionate nature hasn't changed. "She is the most cuddly, affectionate cat I’ve ever met," Jilly described. "She puts her paws on either of your shoulders to give you a real cuddle." The story stands as a powerful testament to the importance of permanent pet identification.
