Steven Soderbergh's forthcoming documentary about John Lennon will incorporate AI-generated scenes, a creative decision the Oscar-winning director believes the late Beatles icon would have embraced. The film centers on Lennon's final in-depth radio interview alongside Yoko Ono, conducted just 12 hours before his tragic murder in December 1980.
AI as a Creative Tool
Soderbergh utilized artificial intelligence to produce metaphorical images and videos for segments where Lennon and Ono delve into abstract philosophical concepts. Budget constraints partly influenced this approach, but the director defends the use of AI as a legitimate creative instrument, comparing it to traditional visual effects rather than an attempt to mislead audiences.
Collaboration with Meta
The filmmaker collaborated with Meta to develop these AI-generated visuals. He emphasizes that the technology serves to enhance storytelling, not to deceive. Sean Ono Lennon, the couple's son, has indicated that his father, known for his openness to new technology, would have been eager to experiment with AI.
The documentary promises to offer a unique perspective on Lennon's final hours and his enduring legacy, blending archival material with innovative AI imagery to explore the couple's philosophical discussions.
