Paul Dano Expresses Gratitude After Tarantino's Scathing Acting Critique

Acclaimed actor Paul Dano has publicly responded to director Quentin Tarantino's harsh criticism of his acting abilities, thanking those who rallied to his defence. The controversy emerged last month when Tarantino made disparaging comments about Dano's performance in Paul Thomas Anderson's 2007 film There Will Be Blood.

Dano's Gracious Response to Industry Backlash

Speaking to Variety this week, Dano addressed the situation with remarkable grace. "That was really nice," he said regarding the outpouring of support from colleagues and fans. "I was also incredibly grateful that the world spoke up for me so I didn't have to." The actor's measured response stands in stark contrast to Tarantino's inflammatory remarks.

Tarantino's Controversial Podcast Comments

The dispute originated during Tarantino's appearance on Bret Easton Ellis's podcast in December, where the director was discussing his favourite films of the 21st century. While ranking There Will Be Blood at number five, Tarantino declared it would have been his top choice if not for Dano's involvement.

Tarantino launched into a scathing assessment, stating: "He is weak sauce, man. He is the weak sister. [Daniel Day-Lewis] is eating him [alive]. Austin Butler would have been wonderful in that role. He is just such a weak, weak, uninteresting guy."

The director concluded with particularly harsh language, calling Dano "the limpest dick in the world" and "the weakest fucking actor in SAG." Tarantino also criticised Owen Wilson and Matthew Lillard during the same podcast appearance.

Hollywood Rallies Behind Dano

The entertainment industry responded with overwhelming support for Dano following Tarantino's comments. A representative for Daniel Day-Lewis told The Guardian that the three-time Oscar winner considers Dano "among the best and most talented actors of his generation."

Reese Witherspoon, who starred with Dano in Inherent Vice, wrote on social media: "Paul Dano is an incredibly gifted, versatile actor. More importantly, he is a gentleman."

Other notable figures who publicly defended Dano include:

  • Matt Reeves, director of The Batman, who called Dano "an incredible actor, and an incredible person"
  • Ben Stiller, who described Dano as "fucking brilliant"
  • Alec Baldwin, who shared a video statement saying: "I love Paul Dano. And if you don't love Paul Dano, shhh."

Industry Figures Condemn Tarantino's Approach

George Clooney used a recent award ceremony speech to address the controversy, stating he would be "honoured" to work with Dano, Wilson, and Lillard. Clooney added: "I don't enjoy watching people be cruel. We are living in a time of cruelty. We don't need to be adding to it."

Toni Collette, Dano's co-star in Little Miss Sunshine, offered a more direct response at the Sundance Film Festival: "Fuck that guy! He must've been high ... it was just confusing. Who does that?"

Jonathan Dayton, co-director of Little Miss Sunshine, called Tarantino's remarks an "embarrassment" and suggested: "I can only think that [Dano's] rawness of his performance made Tarantino uncomfortable. He couldn't be easily filed."

Lillard's Response to Being Criticised

Matthew Lillard, who was also targeted by Tarantino, shared his perspective on the criticism: "It hurts your feelings. It fucking sucks. And you wouldn't say that to Tom Cruise. You wouldn't say that to somebody who's a top-line actor in Hollywood."

The controversy highlights ongoing debates about artistic criticism versus personal attacks within the entertainment industry, with many questioning whether Tarantino's comments crossed professional boundaries.
