British-born US Navy veteran dies in Georgia jail while facing murder charges
Olaolukitan Adon Abel, a 26-year-old British-born man and US Navy veteran, has died in a Georgia jail while awaiting trial for a series of shootings that officials described as acts of "pure evil." The DeKalb County Sheriff's Office reported that Abel was found unresponsive in his cell on Tuesday evening and was pronounced dead despite immediate efforts by officials to revive him.
No suspicious circumstances surrounding the death
Authorities have not disclosed a cause of death but indicated there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the incident. Abel had been charged with the murders of Lauren Bullis, an employee of the Department of Homeland Security, and Prianna Weathers, following what police described as a violent shooting spree near Atlanta.
US Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin confirmed that Abel had received US citizenship in 2022 under the Biden administration. Secretary Mullin stated following the killings: "A DHS employee, Lauren Bullis, was brutally shot and stabbed to death by Olaolukitan Adon Abel, a 26-year-old, born in the United Kingdom, who was naturalised by the Biden administration in 2022."
Additional murder charge was pending
Police had been seeking an additional murder charge after Tony Matthews, who was injured in a shooting outside a shopping centre, died on Sunday. The Brookhaven Police Department reported that Abel had been taken into custody in Troup County, southwest of Atlanta, following coordination with local detectives.
According to official statements, Abel was also arrested for the murder of an unidentified woman whom he reportedly shot outside a Checkers drive-through restaurant, before randomly shooting a homeless man multiple times outside a Kroger supermarket in Brookhaven. Secretary Mullin added: "These acts of pure evil have devastated our department and my prayers are with the families of the victims."
The case has drawn significant attention due to the violent nature of the crimes and Abel's background as a naturalised US citizen and military veteran. The investigation into the shootings and Abel's subsequent death in custody continues, with authorities providing limited details about the circumstances.
