Coronation Street Star Sue Devaney Unveils Emotional Dementia Storyline
In an exclusive interview, Coronation Street actress Sue Devaney has teased "moving" scenes ahead for her character Debbie Webster, as the beloved resident grapples with worsening dementia symptoms. The storyline intensifies amid a bitter feud with her secret son, Carl Webster, creating a poignant narrative that has captivated viewers.
Debbie's Heartbreaking Decision Amid Declining Health
Devaney revealed that Debbie's deteriorating condition leads her to make a brutal decision, driven by the realization that time is not on her side. "I think she's just had enough," Devaney explained. "She's reached a point where she's thinking, okay, how much time have I got left? What am I gonna do with that time? Do I want to be fighting, arguing and dealing with people who are lying to me?" This emotional turning point sees Debbie prioritizing her own well-being over ongoing conflicts.
Carl's Antics Push Debbie to the Brink
The feud with Carl has escalated dramatically, with him exploiting Debbie's memory problems and declining health for personal gain. He even allowed her to take blame for a car crash that resulted in Billy Mayhew's death. The final straw comes when Carl destroys Debbie's hotel and threatens to ruin the wedding of Lisa Swain and Carla Connor, described by Devaney as "the wedding of the year." "Oh my gosh, she's devastated, absolutely devastated," Devaney said, highlighting Debbie's distress.
Could Debbie Turn to Violence?
With Carl's behavior reaching dangerous levels, speculation arises about whether Debbie could resort to violence. Devaney addressed this possibility, noting that "sometimes people with dementia can get violent, especially with vascular dementia." However, she suggested that Debbie might "kill him with words rather than actions," emphasizing the psychological toll. If others, like husband Ronnie Bailey or brother Kevin Webster, were to harm Carl, Devaney asserted Debbie would never forgive them, stating, "No. Not at all. I think it would take a long time to forgive them and Debbie hasn't got time."
Portraying Dementia with Authenticity
Devaney shared insights into her approach to playing Debbie's dementia journey, consulting with a dementia specialist to ensure accuracy. "I speak to my friend who is a dementia specialist and she tells me the journey I'm going on and if I am doing it correctly," she said. "You wanna do it right and I don't want to not tell the full impact that dementia has on somebody." She described the role as "really moving" and highlighted the fluctuating nature of the illness, with days of lucidity interspersed with difficult episodes.
Hope for Lighter Moments Ahead
Despite the heavy themes, Devaney expressed hope for more fun scenes featuring Debbie and her girlfriends. "I'm hoping you see a lot more of the fun side of Debbie for the next few months, with her girlfriends," she said, envisioning spa trips and good times. She drew parallels to her own friendships, adding, "It's the same with Debbie and her friends. That really strong group of women, all different, as are my friends. I love that."
Fan Support and Upcoming Drama
Devaney thanked fans for their support, noting that Debbie is based on "strong, northern, working class women" she grew up with. Looking ahead to the show's murder week, she promised "a lot of adventure, a lot of drama, a lot of tension, and lots of happiness because we have a wedding!" Coronation Street continues to air weeknights, delivering this compelling storyline to audiences.
