In a candid television appearance, acclaimed actress Anna Maxwell Martin has offered a rare glimpse into her personal life, detailing her relationship with cameraman Richard Cornelius. The 48-year-old star faced probing questions about her romance during an episode of ITV's innovative programme, The Assembly, which aired on Tuesday evening.
A Refreshingly Honest Interview Format
The critically praised show features interviewers who are autistic, neurodivergent, or have learning disabilities, creating an atmosphere celebrated for its disarming honesty and refreshing approach to celebrity conversations. This unique setting provided the backdrop for Anna's personal revelations.
How the Romance Began
Anna disclosed that she first encountered Richard while working on the Sky comedy series Code 404. With characteristic frankness, she admitted to being the one who initiated their connection. When one interviewer cheekily requested she "spill the tea" about their meeting, Anna laughed and complied with the request.
"Yes, I will spill the tea. He is a cameraman," she confirmed, before elaborating on their initial encounter. "His name is Richard. We'd just come out of Covid and I was on a production and I thought 'he looks nice'. And so I made it clear to him I thought he looked nice and then we went on a date."
Clarifying Their Relationship Status
When another interviewer inquired if the couple had married, Anna provided a definitive response. "We're not married. We're not married. I'm not marrying any of these cameramen!" she declared with evident amusement.
Richard Cornelius has established an impressive career behind the camera, with credits including major productions such as Paddington In Peru, Wonka, Ted Lasso, and Better Man.
Life After Personal Tragedy
The conversation naturally turned to Anna's personal history, particularly her relationship with South African director Roger Michell, with whom she shares two teenage daughters. The couple separated in 2020, and Michell tragically died from a heart attack the following year.
Anna previously explained to The Guardian the profound impact of this loss: "When Roger died, it was difficult, because I wanted to be with my daughters all the time, but I also needed to work. We were suddenly a single-income, single-parent family and it was extremely hard."
Prioritising Family and Professional Boundaries
Her desire to be present for her daughters, Maggie (16) and Nancy (14), has fundamentally reshaped her approach to work. Anna revealed she "no longer has the bandwidth" to collaborate with difficult individuals, though she acknowledged she might tolerate such situations for "a money job."
Reflecting on her relationship with Michell in 2022, Anna emphasised their enduring friendship despite their separation. "We didn't have grudges. I don't operate like that, Roger didn't really operate like that... When Roger died, I lost one of my best friends. I see it as that," she shared.
This heartfelt interview on The Assembly not only provided insight into Anna Maxwell Martin's current romance but also painted a broader picture of her resilience, priorities, and the personal journey that has shaped her life in recent years.
