Vet Explains Why Your Dog Licks Your Face, Hands and Feet

While some may consider it endearing and others find it mildly annoying, an expert has revealed that a dog licking you carries real meaning. Vet Dr Julian Norton, speaking on behalf of Pure Pet Food, explains: "People sometimes ask why dogs nudge and nuzzle with their noses. Part of the reason is that dogs really feel part of the family and part of the tribe, and they're trying to get attention by nuzzling you."

These behaviours are not random; they represent your dog's way of trying to bond with you. Dr Norton adds: "It's quite endearing. I think it's a bit like when dogs come and lick us on our face or hands or that sort of thing. They're just really wanting to be part of the family and get some attention."

According to the vet, licking commonly acts as an indication of bonding or an emotional check-in. "Whether it's a tender lick on the hand or an enthusiastic one on the face, your dog could be attempting to gauge your mood. It's their way of expressing 'I care'," he says.

Nevertheless, licking is just one of many ways dogs express themselves and interact with their owners. Tail wagging is another behaviour that is commonly misunderstood. While many assume a wagging tail indicates a happy dog, the reality is considerably more complex. The position, speed, and rigidity of the wag can communicate everything from joy to unease.

A high, relaxed wag generally suggests excitement, whereas a low, slow wag could point to anxiety or caution. Perhaps most remarkably, dogs may genuinely "smile" when they are experiencing playfulness or feeling comfortable. While it is not identical to a human smile, certain dogs retract their lips in a way that appears strikingly similar to one. When this expression is paired with calm body language and a wagging tail, it is a clear indication that your canine companion is in high spirits.

These nuanced signals—from licking to tail wags to grins—all contribute to strengthening the relationship between you and your pet. Understanding how to interpret them can result in a significantly deeper connection, and ultimately, a happier and more assured dog.
