Sir Chris Hoy has declared himself cancer free after a battle with stage 4 prostate cancer. The Olympic cycling legend, 49, was diagnosed in 2023 and later told his condition was terminal. However, in a recent update, he confirmed he is now cancer free.
Speaking about his journey, Hoy said: 'I remember the early days and the first few weeks, where I had the first few minutes where I wasn't thinking about it, you sort of get distracted by something, and then you come back and snap back into it.' He urged others facing similar diagnoses to 'hang on tight' and stay positive.
Hoy made the comments while promoting his Tour De 4 charity bike ride, which takes place at his namesake velodrome in Glasgow on Sunday, September 7. The event aims to raise around £1 million for prostate cancer research and support.
He has also launched a fitness partnership with PureGym, The Institute of Cancer Research, and the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust to encourage men with prostate cancer to be more active. The initiative offers free gym memberships and structured exercise programmes for those on hormone therapy.
Advanced prostate cancer affects around 20,000 men in the UK each year. Hoy emphasised the importance of exercise, saying: 'Scientific studies have shown that structured exercise is the perfect complement to many cancer treatments.'
