Billy Ray Cyrus has opened up about a terrifying health crisis that left him fighting for his life and fearing he would never sing again. The 64-year-old country music icon told People magazine that he developed a severe case of sepsis in 2024, followed by a diagnosis of vocal paralysis.
A Grim Prognosis
At his lowest point, Cyrus says his entire body had swollen, and doctors advised him to get his affairs in order. The situation was made even more painful because he was treated in the same hospital where his mother, Ruth Ann, had passed away two years earlier. 'I don't know exactly how it evolved. It was my worst nightmare,' the Achy Breaky Heart singer recalled.
A Miraculous Recovery
Despite the grave outlook, Cyrus made a full recovery, which he describes as a miracle. 'I believe God answered my prayers,' he said. However, the ordeal didn't end there. He was then diagnosed with vocal paralysis, threatening his singing career. 'For someone whose livelihood depends on his voice, it's a far bigger problem,' he noted.
Unexpected Sources of Strength
During this difficult period, Cyrus found comfort in his daughter Noah's song 'Don't Put It All on Me,' written by his son Braison. The lyric 'Some days, we might fall apart, but we're never broken' resonated deeply with him. Another poignant moment came from his five-year-old grandson, Bear, who uttered two simple words: 'Try again.' Cyrus said Bear had never spoken directly to him before, and those words encouraged him to keep pushing forward.
Support from Elizabeth Hurley
Actress Elizabeth Hurley, whom Cyrus has been dating for about a year, also played a crucial role. 'She never allowed me to give up on myself,' he said. Hurley insisted his voice was improving even when he couldn't see it, and she persuaded him to appear on season 14 of The Masked Singer earlier this year. 'She believed it would help restore my confidence and prove I could still perform,' Cyrus explained.
A New Chapter
Now, Cyrus says he's singing every day and feels better about his voice than he has in years. He is preparing to release The Hill, his first album in 14 years. 'After everything that happened, I've finally found a place where I'm happy. This chapter is one of the better moments I've experienced in a long time,' he concluded.
