Doctor Warns: 4 Red Flag Signs After a Flight

A doctor has warned holidaymakers to never ignore four red flag signs after a flight, as they could indicate a dangerous condition requiring immediate medical attention. Dr Mark Regi, Consultant Interventional Radiologist at VeinCentre, explained that air travel, especially long-haul flights, can strain the circulatory system due to prolonged inactivity. People with poor circulation or varicose veins are at higher risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clot typically found in the leg.

Four Red Flag Symptoms

Dr Regi highlighted the following symptoms that should not be ignored after a flight:

  • Throbbing pain in the calf or thigh
  • Swelling in one leg
  • Swollen veins that are hard or painful
  • Skin discoloration around the leg, turning red, blue, or darkened

He advised: “If any swelling doesn’t ease after a flight and you experience a dull ache or heavy cramping, it’s always worth speaking to a doctor. DVT can be serious, so keep a close eye on any changes that don’t settle down. If you experience shortness of breath or chest pain together with these symptoms, seek medical advice straight away, as this could be a sign a clot has travelled to the lung.”

Who Is Most at Risk?

People with varicose veins or known poor circulation are at greater risk. Dr Regi recommends moving around as much as possible during long-haul flights. He said: “I always recommend investing in medical-grade compression stockings if you have varicose veins. You should also keep hydrated and minimise alcohol and caffeinated drinks. Exercises such as calf raises and ankle pumps can keep blood pumping around your legs when you can’t get up.”

Treatment for Varicose Veins

Dr Regi emphasised that varicose veins are not just a cosmetic issue. Treatments like Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA) can close off affected veins, addressing the root cause and preventing complications.
