Bestselling novelist Jane Fallon has shared a positive health update following her second breast cancer surgery, confirming the procedure "went well" and expressing her eagerness to "get back to normal."
Second surgery successful
The 65-year-old author, best known for her long-term partnership with comedian Ricky Gervais, revealed her breast cancer diagnosis just over a month ago after a routine mammogram. On Thursday, she took to Instagram to detail the outcome of her latest surgery.
"So, my second surgery went well. They got the clear margin they need on the original excision, which is great," Fallon wrote. She noted that while a "new little patch of precancerous cells" was discovered, medical professionals agreed that further surgery would be unnecessary, as a significant percentage of precancerous cells do not develop into cancer.
Next steps and treatment options
Discussing her future treatment plan, Fallon explained: "I saw the oncologist today and we’ve agreed the risks of radiation outweigh the benefits in my case. Which leaves Tamoxifen (or similar) or wait and see (my preferred option)." She admitted feeling apprehensive about medication, stating: "I’m very nervous about going the drug route, because I know the side effects can be hideous, but I’m taking all the info on board & luckily there’s no pressure to make a quick decision."
According to the NHS, breast cancer remains the most prevalent cancer among women in the UK. Early detection through mammograms is crucial, as it significantly increases the likelihood of successful treatment.
