A devastating car crash in the rural southern Netherlands has claimed the lives of three children and an adult, with four other children seriously injured. The incident occurred when a vehicle struck a group of cyclists who were on a school camping trip, according to emergency services.
Details of the Tragedy
Police have detained a 19-year-old man for questioning, though they have not confirmed whether he was the driver of the car involved. The collision took place on a provincial road between farmers' fields near the small town of Vogelwaarde, approximately 200 kilometers south of Amsterdam.
Two children and one adult died at the scene. A third child later succumbed to injuries at a hospital in Rotterdam on Thursday evening, as confirmed by the Zeeland Security Region organization. Four other children were rushed to hospitals in the Netherlands and neighboring Belgium for urgent medical treatment.
Victims Were on School Trip
The group comprised 14 schoolchildren and two chaperones from an elementary school in the nearby town of Axel. They were on a cycling outing when the tragedy struck. Dutch media images showed a car with a shattered windscreen and damaged hood resting in a field adjacent to the road.
Rare Incident in Cycling-Friendly Nation
Such accidents involving multiple cyclists are uncommon in the Netherlands, where cycling is deeply integrated into daily life and most roads feature dedicated bike lanes. Police are actively investigating the cause of the crash. No further details have been released at this time.
