Seven to Be Sentenced for Ely Riots: Live Court Updates

Seven individuals are set to be sentenced today for their roles in the Ely riots, which erupted in Cardiff in May 2023. The second day of the sentencing hearing begins at Cardiff Crown Court, following the first day on Monday, where statements from police officers were read out. The violence broke out after the deaths of two teenage boys, Kyrees Sullivan, 16, and Harvey Evans, 15, who were killed in an electric bike collision on May 22, 2023.

Background of the Riots

The incident occurred on Wilson Road in the Ely suburb of Cardiff. Around 150 people gathered, leading to hours of violence and vandalism. The mothers of the deceased attempted to reach their children but were blocked by police. Initial shock turned to anger as rumours circulated that police were responsible for the deaths, though the boys had been pursued by a police van prior to the collision.

Sentencing Details

This morning, defendants Lee Robinson, Callum O'Sullivan, Asdon O'Dare, and Kyle Telemaque will be sentenced. This afternoon, Harvey James, Jasmine Smith, and Tyler Stapleton face sentencing. On Monday, the court heard about injuries suffered by police officers, including one who was set alight. Defendant Ryan Knight shouted from the dock, demanding mention of the deceased boys, and was ordered to be taken to a cell. Michaela Gonzales, 37, was also involved, throwing a bottle at police before hiding behind a car.
