Daughter and Husband Jailed for Vicious Attack on Mother, 56
Daughter and Husband Jailed for Attack on Mother, 56

A daughter and her husband savagely attacked her own mother in her home after battering down the door to her flat. The 56-year-old mother was left bloodied and forced to crawl for help after the brutal assault. She was kicked in the head and dragged by her hair during the attack by her daughter and son-in-law.

The Attack

Paula and Malcolm McGill left Kirsty Barrie with life-threatening injuries, including a brain bleed, after forcing their way into her Clydebank flat on May 6, 2024. The High Court in Glasgow heard that the mother and her 41-year-old daughter had been estranged for about seven years, despite living close to each other.

In the early hours, police responded to a noise complaint at a neighboring flat. Officers spoke to the McGills, but Paula claimed she had heard nothing. About 10 minutes later, Miss Barrie heard her buzzer and saw her daughter and son-in-law outside. She refused to let them in, but Malcolm McGill, 43, kicked the door open.

Prosecutor David McDonald said: 'Both McGills entered. Miss Barrie was in a state of shock. Paula McGill shouted before dragging Miss Barrie to the floor by the hair, some of which was ripped out. She kicked her multiple times on the face and head as she lay on the floor. Malcolm McGill stamped on Miss Barrie's ribs once, and she felt them crunching. The whole assault lasted no more than 30 seconds.'

Aftermath

The McGills fled but were captured on a doorbell camera. Miss Barrie crawled to her bedroom, and a neighbor found her and raised the alarm. Officers arrived to find the bloodied mother, who said she had been attacked by her daughter and son-in-law. With no ambulances available, police took her to hospital. She suffered a brain bleed, fractured nose and ribs, a collapsed lung, severe bruising, and a lip wound.

Mr McDonald said: 'The injuries required ongoing treatment and further specialist input.' She was discharged on May 12, 2024. The McGills were arrested that same morning. Paula initially claimed she was at a friend's house, then admitted being in her mother's close but denied the assault. Malcolm made no comment. Forensic evidence, including blood on Malcolm's Crocs shoes, tied them to the attack.

Sentencing

Both pleaded guilty to assaulting Miss Barrie to severe injury, permanent impairment, and danger of her life. Lord Mulholland said custodial sentences would have been six years each but for the guilty pleas. He jailed them for four and a half years and imposed a lifelong non-harassment order prohibiting contact with Miss Barrie. The judge warned: 'Breaching this order is a criminal offence punishable by imprisonment.'
