A horrific incident has shaken the community of Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh, where a mother and her 15-year-old daughter were allegedly gang raped by a group of up to 10 men after they broke into their home. The assault occurred on Tuesday in the Dolnighona area of the southeastern coastal city.
Details of the Attack
According to local police, the group of eight to ten men cut through a window grille to gain entry. They stole gold jewellery and cash before raping the woman, aged 40, and her teenage daughter. The mother filed a complaint on Wednesday morning, naming seven individuals and five to six unidentified suspects.
Arrests and Ongoing Investigation
Police have arrested five of the named accused, aged between 23 and 27, as well as a 36-year-old man. However, the alleged mastermind, identified by the victims' family, remains at large. Cox's Bazar Assistant Superintendent of Police Abhijit Das reported that this suspect had been released from prison just five days before the attack, where he had been serving time for weapons and robbery charges.
The victims' family told authorities that the same criminal group had previously targeted their home on two or three occasions. At the time of the attack, the mother was home with her two daughters, the teenager and a seven-year-old, who was not harmed.
Authorities continue to search for the remaining suspects and urge anyone with information to come forward. The case has sparked outrage and renewed calls for justice and protection for women in Bangladesh.
