A McDonald's employee in Northern California is recovering after a colleague allegedly threw hot oil on him, causing second-degree burns across a fifth of his body. The incident occurred on Saturday at a restaurant in Yuba City, according to local reports.
Attack Details
Jacob Smith, 20, was preparing to end his shift when he was suddenly assaulted. His mother, Amber Smith, told KCRA that her son was in the office counting money when he saw something out of the corner of his eye. He turned, and the oil was thrown on him. The burns covered 22 percent of his body, including the side of his face, neck, right arm, and back.
The alleged attacker, identified as 23-year-old Jalani Bluett, left the restaurant before police arrived. The Sutter County Sheriff's Office asked for public assistance in locating him, noting he was considered at risk due to a diagnosis and vulnerabilities. Bluett was arrested shortly after midnight local time.
Legal Proceedings
During Bluett's arraignment on June 6, he was held on charges including assault with a deadly weapon, mayhem, and serious felony assault resulting in great bodily injury. He is being held in Sutter County without bail.
Victim's Condition
Jacob is currently hospitalized and scheduled for skin graft surgery later this week. His mother described his pain as excruciating, requiring intensive care. In a GoFundMe message, Jacob expressed gratitude, saying, 'As much as I want to be angry, it's hard when so many people show love. I'm not sad or angry; the pain is necessary to heal.' He thanked God for saving his eye and for his supportive family and friends.
McDonald's has been approached for comment but has not yet responded.
