Former Telemundo Reporter Arrested for Alleged Ethnicity-Targeted Shootings
A former San Diego reporter has been arrested after allegedly asking his victims about their ethnicity before shooting them in what police describe as targeted attacks. Ricardo Berron, 46, of Chula Vista, was taken into custody on March 10 as the suspect in two separate shootings on Palomar Mountain in San Diego County.
Airport Arrest and Alleged Incidents
The former Telemundo reporter was arrested at San Diego International Airport while preparing to leave for vacation, according to police statements. He faces accusations of shooting two people on Palomar Mountain after inquiring about their ethnic background. Both victims were identified as Hispanic men.
One victim, Joseph Valentino, provided a detailed account to Fox 5 San Diego of his October encounter at a mountain lookout. "I looked over my left shoulder and saw the silhouette of somebody holding a rifle at my head and wearing a hoodie," Valentino recalled. "He asked me if I was Mexican. I responded yes. At that point, I saw him zero in on my head, and instinctively turned to the right. I heard the shot - it missed my face and caught my arm."
Victim's Escape and Recovery
Valentino managed to drive away to safety before a second shot struck his rear tire. He quickly sought help at a nearby residence. Medical professionals were able to save his arm following the shooting. To cover mounting medical expenses, Valentino initiated a GoFundMe campaign for support.
Investigators later connected Valentino's experience with a separate February incident in the same area. Another man reported being approached by a suspect while stargazing, with Berron allegedly firing a shot through the driver's side window before fleeing. This victim, who was also questioned about his ethnicity, escaped without injury.
Evidence and Legal Proceedings
During a search of Berron's Chula Vista residence, police discovered a 9mm handgun believed to have been used in one of the shootings. The weapon was collected as evidence. Berron, a father of five, was booked into the Vista Detention Facility on two counts of assault with a deadly weapon. He has since been released on bail pending further legal proceedings.
When approached by Fox 5 San Diego for comment, Berron declined to speak. His wife, Shantel Acosta, told reporters that authorities have identified the wrong person. The Daily Mail has also reached out to Berron for additional comment regarding the allegations.
