A tourist from Thailand has described the terrifying moment she discovered a stranger hiding under her hotel bed in Tokyo. The incident occurred in March, when the woman returned to her hotel room after an evening exploring the city.
After about 20 minutes in bed, she noticed a strange odour, which she likened to a dead animal covered in sugar. When she craned her neck to check under the bed, she saw two dark, wide eyes blinking back at her. The intruder climbed out, blocking her escape, and began screaming. She froze, fearing for her life, before the man fled the room.
The woman called for help, and other guests alerted staff. Police arrived and found a USB cable and power bank under the bed, leading her to believe the man intended to secretly record her. However, police said they were unlikely to find the suspect due to a lack of hotel cameras and did not take a description of the man.
The victim, who now suffers from anxiety and PTSD, has criticised the police response and hopes to raise awareness. She has since shared her story online, receiving support from other women with similar experiences, but also criticism from some men who blamed her for the incident.
