5 Kitchen Items to Remove for a Cheap and Tacky Look
5 Kitchen Items to Remove for a Cheap and Tacky Look

Stop your kitchen looking cheap and tacky by removing five common items, according to interior decorator Penny Modern. She shared her tips on YouTube, emphasizing that what makes a room look expensive is what you take away, not what you add.

1. Exposed Bins

Having an exposed bin is the main mistake. Penny said: "Nothing cheapens a beautiful kitchen more than a dirty, grimy trash can sitting off in the corner." It adds clutter, reminds people of trash, and can cause smells. She recommends concealed bins inside cupboards or a stainless steel bin placed discreetly to "make it disappear."

2. Visible Pot Racks

Pot racks can look cluttered and chaotic, making the kitchen appear cheap unless you have uniform, fancy pans. They also block sightlines, make the kitchen look smaller, and collect dust and grease. Instead, use dividers for horizontal storage in large cupboards, or store pots and pans in the oven.

3. Decor on Top of Kitchen Cabinets

Resist displaying decorative items on top of cabinets that don't reach the ceiling. Pictures, wine bottles, and fake plants make the kitchen look cluttered, smaller, and cheap. Clear all items and embrace the empty space.

4. Word Art Signs

Signs like "kitchen" or "eat, pray, love" add clutter and look generic. Penny advises investing in genuine art, such as a landscape print from Etsy or smaller pieces, which doesn't have to be expensive.

5. Appliances with Mismatched Finishes

Mixed finishes like a white dishwasher, black fridge, and stainless steel stove look jumbled and cheap. Consider panel-ready appliances to hide the finish altogether, a trend seen in luxury homes.
