Robert MacIntyre Reflects on Players Championship and Major Aspirations
Robert MacIntyre, the Scottish golfer who has secured two PGA Tour victories in 2024, recently made a compelling late challenge at the Players Championship. In an interview, he opened up about his ambitions for major tournaments, his experience at the Masters, and the joys of fatherhood, all while maintaining his characteristic self-deprecating humor.
Self-Deprecation and Golfing Prowess
MacIntyre, known for his low-key demeanor, contrasted his approach with that of Ryder Cup teammate Matt Fitzpatrick. "I'm less analytical," he remarked with a smile. "I'm not the brightest guy but I know how to play golf, just shape balls." This humility belies his elite status, as evidenced by his performance at the Players Championship, where he showcased his skills on one of golf's biggest stages.
Major Ambitions and Masters Focus
The 29-year-old from Oban has set his sights on winning majors, following his victory at the Scottish Open. "Now, for me, it is about winning majors," MacIntyre stated. "With the way I am playing, the consistency and the level I know I can play at ... I don't see why not." He expressed excitement about returning to the Masters, where his best finish was a tie for 12th in 2021, despite a disappointing early exit in 2025.
Players Championship Challenge and Resilience
MacIntyre's quest at the Players Championship remained alive until the 16th hole of the final round, where a difficult lie led to a costly error. "I had a chance to win the Players. I am just gutted with the way it finished," he admitted. However, he demonstrated resilience by composing himself for the iconic 17th hole, highlighting his mental fortitude. His comeback from being a dozen shots behind after round two was notable, as no golfer has ever won the Players when more than seven adrift at halfway.
Balancing Golf and Family Life
Off the course, MacIntyre is embracing fatherhood after his partner, Shannon, gave birth to their son in late January. "I feel bad that I am out here competing when Shannon is at home," he shared, praising the support from family. Despite this, he insists his competitive fire remains unchanged. "I am still volatile. It is part of my DNA, that fire," he affirmed, emphasizing that family life helps him reset after tournaments.
Looking Ahead to Future Success
With his driving and putting in top form over the past year, MacIntyre is confident in his abilities. "I knew I had a chance," he said of his Players Championship run, crediting improved iron play and chipping. As he prepares for the Masters and other majors, his blend of talent, determination, and personal growth positions him as a formidable contender in the world of golf.
