Charlize Theron has declared that her children will have to earn their own living, as she has no intention of supporting them financially throughout their lives. The Oscar-winning actress, who adopted Jackson in 2012 and August in 2015, has consistently kept her kids away from the public eye. Now, in a recent podcast appearance, she outlined her philosophy on raising grounded children despite her immense wealth.
No Free Rides in the Theron Household
Speaking on the Therapuss podcast with Jake Shane, the 50-year-old star of Mad Max: Fury Road made it clear that her children will not be handed a life of luxury. She emphasised that their first cars will be modest, used vehicles, and they will need to gain work experience in ordinary jobs. "First of all, your first car is going to be a Datsun because you're going to crash it," she said. "You're going to f*** it up somehow. You're a new driver. So, we're not getting, like, the nice car up front. We need a little bit of experience, and we're going to earn it."
Theron, who is reportedly worth £151 million, stressed that her children must build their own careers without relying on a financial safety net. "It's too soon to kind of say where they're going to end up … they just need to get a job that pays them because I don't want to support them for the rest of [my] life," she explained. She even uses visits to Starbucks as teaching moments, telling her kids: "Look at this… do you see how friendly? You have to be that friendly every morning at 6am, like start getting ready for it."
Not Alone in Her Approach
Theron joins a growing list of celebrities who have vowed not to spoil their children with their fortunes. Sting told the Mail on Sunday: "I told them there won't be much money left because we are spending it! We have a lot of commitments. What comes in, we spend, and there isn't much left." He added, "I certainly don't want to leave them trust funds that are albatrosses round their necks. They have to work. All my kids know that and they rarely ask me for anything, which I really respect and appreciate."
Nigella Lawson has also expressed a similar sentiment, stating: "I am determined that my children should have no financial security. It ruins people not having to earn money." Meanwhile, basketball legend Shaquille O'Neal has been open about his parenting style, telling Business Insider: "My kids are older now. They're kinda upset with me. Not really upset, but they don't understand. I tell them all the time. 'We ain't rich. I'm rich.'"
These celebrities share a common belief that allowing children to earn their own success fosters a strong work ethic and prevents the pitfalls of inherited wealth. Theron's comments reflect a deliberate effort to ensure her children grow up with a sense of responsibility and independence, regardless of her own financial status.
