Wu Yize Beats Shaun Murphy in Final Frame to Win World Snooker Championship

Wu Yize has become world snooker champion for the first time, defeating Shaun Murphy 18-17 in a dramatic final-frame decider at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield. The 22-year-old Chinese player, the second-youngest winner in history, sealed victory with a break of 85, sparking emotional scenes as he was draped in the Chinese flag and lifted the trophy.

Wu, who dropped out of school to pursue snooker, paid tribute to his parents after the match. “My parents are the true champions,” he said, as his mother wiped away tears. “Since I made the decision to drop out of school, my dad has been by my side and my mum has gone through a lot over the years. They are the source of my strengths; I love them so much.”

Murphy, gracious in defeat, said he had predicted Wu would become world champion after beating him earlier in the season. “I hate being right,” Murphy joked. “He will be world champion one day. It’s just a real shame it was today!” The 42-year-old Englishman added that he had given his all and congratulated Wu and his family.

Wu’s long-potting was a key factor in his victory, and commentators noted his potential for further improvement. “He’s going to learn and improve quickly,” one analyst said. “This will not be the last time Wu Yize wins this trophy.” The final was also notable for a misunderstanding by Wu, who initially thought the crowd’s “Wuuuu” chants were boos, before being told they were cheering him on.

Wu becomes the youngest champion since Murphy in 2005, and his rivalry with fellow Chinese player Zhao Xintong is tipped to become one of the sport’s great contests. After the match, Wu said he just wanted a good sleep, having felt nerves throughout the second session.
