Hamilton described the occasion as "a special day" and "one of the most amazing weeks I've had" after claiming third place at the Shanghai International Circuit. His mother Carmen was present in the Ferrari team garage to witness the achievement, which represented Hamilton's tenth podium finish at this particular circuit but his first while driving for the iconic Italian team.
The 41-year-old embraced his mother in parc ferme following the race, creating a landmark moment in his Ferrari journey that began this season after his high-profile move from Mercedes. Hamilton had traveled to China with his mother, sharing what he called "really special moments together" throughout the week.
Dedication to Both Mothers
During his post-race interview, Hamilton made a point of honoring both his biological mother and his stepmother. "Happy Mother's Day to my mum, and to my step-mum Linda who has been here with me many times and been a huge part of my life," he said. "And also to all the mums around the world."
Hamilton expressed particular gratitude for the support he receives in Shanghai, noting that having his mother witness this fan enthusiasm was "phenomenal." He revealed a rare personal insight, explaining that "last night was the first time in 20 or so years that I've been racing that I sat down and took my mum through everything that I go through, and she was gobsmacked."
Podium Sharing with Mercedes Successor
The British driver shared the podium with race winner Kimi Antonelli, the Italian teenager who inherited Hamilton's former seat at Mercedes. Antonelli secured his maiden Formula 1 victory at the Chinese Grand Prix, creating a symbolic passing of the torch moment between the two drivers.
Hamilton offered generous praise for his successor, stating: "A huge congratulations to Kimi, it's a great privilege to see him take my place and get to work with an amazing team. Congratulations to everyone at Mercedes who have done a phenomenal job. To be up there with Kimi, with Bono [former race engineer Peter Bonnington], it was really sweet."
Ferrari's Progress and Personal Reflection
While Ferrari has begun the new campaign strongly, Hamilton acknowledged that the team currently cannot match Mercedes over a full race distance. He provided technical analysis of his performance, noting: "I learned a lot. There are still some improvements to be made, but my race pace has been really good, particularly on the hard tyres in these first two races."
The driver described fighting back from fourth position to secure third place as "a hell of a push" and expressed particular satisfaction with achieving his first podium with Ferrari.
