Former Sunderland star Michael Gray has opened up about his infamous nightclub altercation with Wayne Rooney, revealing he can now have a "laugh and a joke" about the incident but firmly ruling out any possibility of a charity boxing rematch.
The Infamous Nightclub Incident
The confrontation occurred in September 2006 at Manchester's celebrity hotspot Panacea bar, where both footballers were enjoying separate nights out. According to Gray, he made what he considered playful remarks about the women Rooney was with, allegedly asking the Manchester United striker "which one are you having tonight" without realizing Rooney's now-wife Coleen was among the group.
Witness accounts from the time suggested Gray had propositioned Rooney for a threesome, though Gray has consistently denied this version of events. Regardless of the exact wording, Rooney took immediate offense and responded with a powerful punch to Gray's face.
The Aftermath and Recovery
The impact was severe enough that Gray had to wear sunglasses for several days afterward to conceal his black eye from paparazzi photographers. At the time of the incident, Gray was playing for Blackburn Rovers and promptly informed his manager Mark Hughes about what had transpired.
Rooney's spokesman issued a statement alleging that Gray had approached their table uninvited and made remarks offensive to Coleen and other female guests. The spokesman claimed Rooney had asked Gray to leave multiple times before the physical altercation occurred.
Reflections Nearly Two Decades Later
Now, almost twenty years after the confrontation, Gray maintains a philosophical perspective on the incident. "I think I'll leave it at Wayne being one-up," the former England defender told Daily Mail Sport via Uudet Kasinot.
"I'm not that type of person who I think would climb through the ropes to have a white-collar fight, if that's what they're called these days," Gray continued. "But no, it was just one of those moments that you look back on and I can have a laugh and a joke about it now."
The Story That 'Grew Arms and Legs'
Gray believes the incident has been exaggerated over time. Speaking on the No Tippy Tappy Football podcast with Sam Allardyce and Natalie Pike last year, he provided his account of what actually happened that evening.
"Everybody just blows the story up as it goes on," Gray explained. "We were at Blackburn and Man United came into the nightclub. Wayne Rooney was there, three or four of the players; myself, Gary Flitcroft, Stephen Reid."
Gray described the scene: "We had the booths, one with Blackburn lads here and Man United lads there. We were young at the time and we were enjoying ourselves. Lots of girls around."
He recounted his approach: "I saw the Man United players and I leant over all the girls and, I'll keep this clean, I just said, 'alright Wayne, which one are you having tonight?' because that was just normal conversation that we'd have, not knowing that Coleen was one of the girls that were in the crowd next to him."
Gray concluded: "So he didn't really like that, and I got one in the eye and that was pretty much it to be honest with you. But then it came out, 'Gray asks Rooney and Coleen for a threesome and everything.' It was a load of rubbish."
Moving Forward Without Grudges
The former defender acknowledges that people still ask him about the incident regularly but maintains there are no lingering hard feelings. "It's something that plenty of people ask me about, but what do you put it down to? A mistake at the time, but we've been fine since, so I'm over it," Gray stated.
Rooney's spokesman emphasized at the time that the Manchester United legend bore "no ill feeling" toward Gray following the brief confrontation. Both players have moved on with their careers and lives since that September night in 2006, though the story continues to capture public imagination nearly two decades later.
