Liverpool Legends Unleash Fury Over 'Awful' Tottenham Draw

Liverpool icon Jamie Carragher has delivered a brutal assessment of his former club following what he described as an 'awful' 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday. The Sky Sports pundit was joined in his condemnation by fellow analyst Roy Keane, who didn't mince words in his criticism of the reigning Premier League champions.

Late Collapse Extends Concerning Trend

The Reds appeared to be heading for victory after Dominik Szoboszlai's 18th-minute free-kick gave them the lead at Anfield. However, former Everton striker Richarlison struck in second-half stoppage time to secure a point for the visitors. This marked a record-breaking eighth goal Liverpool have conceded in the 90th minute or later in Premier League matches this season.

Liverpool were widely expected to secure three points against a Tottenham side mired in a relegation battle and enduring an eleven-game winless streak. Instead, Spurs secured their first point in six matches while Liverpool's underwhelming title defence continued with another disappointing result.

Carragher Questions Manager and Summer Signings

Carragher expressed profound frustration with the performance, questioning both manager Arne Slot's future and the club's summer transfer business. 'It was an awful performance. No disrespect to Tottenham, but they are the worst team in the Premier League now, probably for the last couple of months,' Carragher reflected during his Sky Sports commentary.

'They are exactly who you want to play, playing at home, the incentive of your results this weekend, and to put in a performance like that. But it's been like that all season,' he continued. 'And the big question on everybody's lips is that down to the manager or the make-up of the squad?'

The former defender suggested fundamental issues with the team's character: 'I think a lot of it goes back to what happened in the summer, the profile of the players that came in, and there's just too many players who just want to play when the ball's at their feet. They don't want to dig in and make it difficult. That's why it's so easy to play against this Liverpool team.'

Keane Brands Liverpool 'Bad Champions'

Roy Keane matched Carragher's strong viewpoint, delivering a particularly damning verdict on Liverpool's title defence. 'Considering they were league champions last year, and I've said it before, I've said it a number of times, Liverpool have been bad champions. They are bad champions,' the former Manchester United captain stated bluntly.

'They were bad champions a few years ago, they are 21 points behind Arsenal. What a drop off that is! That is so bad,' Keane continued, highlighting Liverpool's dramatic decline from last season's title winners to their current position twenty-one points behind league leaders Arsenal.

Keane identified deeper issues within the squad: 'I think there are issues going on in the background. I think there are bigger issues. There are details you can fix, players tucking in. But I think there is stuff going on there. I don't think they're all on the same page, there doesn't seem to be that chemistry between the players.'

Mentality and Celebration Culture Questioned

The Irish pundit expanded his criticism to question Liverpool's winning mentality, recalling their exuberant celebrations last season after securing the title. 'It's almost that mentality - last year I criticised Liverpool towards the end when I felt they were almost partying too much,' Keane explained.

'They were partying with four, five, six weeks to go and there were celebrations after every home game. You're going "you're Liverpool Football Club, are you not expected to win league titles?" Enjoy it, don't get me wrong, but let's back it up next year,' he added, referencing manager Arne Slot's trip to Ibiza while games remained to be played last season.

Keane emphasised the standards expected at elite clubs: 'That's why you play for the big clubs. When I see teams win a trophy then disappear for 10 years... I'm thinking the same with Arsenal, when Arsenal win the league this year you don't want them to disappear for the next three, four, five years, you've got to back it up.'

Defensive Frailties and Individual Errors

Both pundits highlighted specific defensive problems that contributed to Liverpool's disappointing result. Keane pointed to Szoboszlai's positioning for Tottenham's equaliser: 'Liverpool have to defend better. The goal they gave away and Szoboszlai's positioning as an experienced player, you can't be on the outside looking back in. You've got to get back in. You're 1-0 up. You take your 1-0 victory and move on.'

'We can see the problems. Defend better, whether it be Robertson with your headers, the two centre-halves from a kick from the goalkeeper, that's when you've got to be tucked in,' Keane continued, before delivering his final assessment: 'There's definitely something missing at Liverpool. They're way off it. There's definitely tension in the stadium, there's nervousness. The players need to take responsibility - the goal they gave away was schoolboy stuff.'

League Position and Missed Opportunity

The draw saw Liverpool climb to fifth in the Premier League table, moving above Chelsea on goal difference. However, they missed a crucial opportunity to claim fourth position after Manchester United's victory over Aston Villa earlier on Sunday.

United now sit third with 54 points from 30 matches, three points ahead of Villa, five above Liverpool, and six clear of Chelsea. Liverpool must also remain wary of seventh-placed Brentford, who have 44 points with a game in hand, keeping the race for European qualification tightly contested.
