Bellamy: Wales Cannot Lose Wilson for WC Play-Offs

Bellamy Stresses Wilson's Vital Role in Wales' World Cup Play-Off Campaign

Wales manager Craig Bellamy has openly admitted that his national side cannot afford to lose the services of star forward Harry Wilson as they prepare for their critical World Cup play-off campaign. The in-form Fulham attacker has been a standout performer this season, netting an impressive 13 goals across all competitions for both club and country.

Wilson's Meteoric Rise to Prominence

Since the retirement of legendary Welsh forward Gareth Bale in January 2023, Harry Wilson has seamlessly transitioned into becoming Wales' most influential and pivotal player. The 28-year-old, who made his international debut back in October 2013, has remarkably scored 12 of his 17 international goals over the past three years alone. His most recent appearance for Wales saw him bag a spectacular hat-trick against North Macedonia in November, further cementing his status as the team's primary offensive threat.

Bellamy was unequivocal in his assessment, stating, "There's still one or two players we can't afford to lose. I'd like us to get out of that situation and Harry's definitely turned into one of those players. You look at our goals and assists, he's played a huge part in that department."

Immediate Focus on Bosnia and Herzegovina Clash

All attention is now firmly fixed on the upcoming World Cup play-off semi-final, where Wales will host Bosnia and Herzegovina in Cardiff on March 26. The winners of this crucial encounter will then face either Italy or Northern Ireland at home on March 31, with a coveted spot at this summer's World Cup finals at stake.

Bellamy emphasised the condensed preparation period, noting, "We haven't been together for three months, but we now have three days to qualify. Every team has three days to train. The teams that use the three days properly to prepare will be the ones that qualify." He added that while some planning for the World Cup has occurred, his primary focus remains entirely on the Bosnia game.

Injury Concerns and Selection Decisions

The Welsh squad has been dealt several significant blows ahead of the play-offs, with key trio Ben Davies, Chris Mepham, and Kieffer Moore all ruled out due to injury. Captain Davies suffered a broken ankle in January and remains a major doubt for the World Cup should Wales progress. In a notable omission, veteran midfielder Aaron Ramsey has been left out of the squad once again, having been without a club since departing Mexican side Pumas UNAM in December.

Failed Bid for Dual-Nationality Player

Wales have also faced disappointment in their attempts to recruit Tottenham Hotspur's England Under-21 defender Ashley Phillips. The 20-year-old, currently on loan at Stoke City and eligible through his Swansea-born mother, was capped by Wales at under-16 level in 2021 before representing England youth teams. Despite a formal approach to bring him back into the Welsh setup, Phillips has opted to remain with England.

Bellamy commented on the broader strategy, saying, "We always look at dual-nationalities. It's been so good for us over a number of years. It's something for down the road. It's not for now but we're always active on it. If there are players of quality and they have a chance to play for Wales, we have to be."

As the play-off semi-final approaches, the fitness and form of Harry Wilson will be paramount to Wales' hopes of securing a place at the World Cup, with Bellamy's reliance on his talisman clearer than ever.
