Governor's Daughter Hope Walz Sends Christmas Message to ICE Targets
Hope Walz's Christmas Message on ICE Arrests in Minnesota

Hope Walz, the 24-year-old daughter of Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, used a late-night TikTok message on Christmas Eve to extend seasonal greetings to individuals being arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in her home state.

From Ski Slopes to Social Justice: A Viral Message

The social worker and ski instructor, who has emerged as a messenger for the Democratic party, posted her first video since deleting a profanity-laced clip two weeks prior. That earlier video was a response to former President Donald Trump labelling her father "retarded" on his Truth Social platform.

In her Christmas update, Walz told her over half a million followers she was working in Bozeman, Montana, and away from her family. She described her family playing Yahtzee back in Minnesota before her message took a pointed turn.

Focus Shifts to ICE Enforcement and Community Struggles

"Today, I’m holding all of our neighbours that ICE has been terrorising near and dear to my heart," Walz stated, also sending love to unhoused people and anyone struggling. Her comments come as ICE has recently ramped up operations in Minnesota, particularly around Minneapolis, leading to complaints of agents harassing Somali-American citizens.

This enforcement surge follows a scandal where more than $1 billion was stolen from state-run, Medicaid-funded programmes, with many suspects reportedly from Somali immigrant communities. Critics, according to a New York Times report, suggest a reluctance to investigate due to racial sensitivities contributed to the scale of the fraud.

A Political Firestorm and Family Defence

The political backdrop to Walz's message is intensely personal. Trump's Thanksgiving Day insult accused Governor Walz of incompetence regarding the fraud case. Hope Walz's subsequent, now-deleted, TikTok defence accused Trump of inspiring his "cult members" to attack her family.

She specifically highlighted the impact on her brother, Gus, who has a non-verbal learning disability and was visibly emotional when his father accepted the vice-presidential nomination alongside Kamala Harris last year. "He dealt with people calling him that last August and now there's a resurgence," she said in the earlier video, referencing the offensive term.

Walz claimed the incident led to hateful direct messages and a person driving by her home to shout slurs. Meanwhile, her father's administration has begun shutting down the compromised housing initiative.

As a social media star targeting Gen Z women—a key demographic—Hope Walz's blend of pop culture, fitness, and progressive politics continues to draw attention, ensuring her family remains in the political spotlight.
